The 1980 Philadelphia
Eagles met the 1981 Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl of the
CFL Early 80's league. The Bengals won the AFC with a win over
the AFC's top defensive team in the Buffalo Bills of 1980. The
Eagles advanced to the finals with a victory over the QB
considered by many as the best of all time in Joe Montana and his
1981 SF 49ers.
Cincinnati took the
opening kick and started at their 21 yard line. After 2 plays
gaining 5 yards the Eagles looked to force a punt. Rather than
receiving a punt they were returning a kickoff as Kenny Anderson
hit Chris Collinsworth on a short slant that Collinsworth broke
for a 74 yard TD and a quick 7-0 lead. The Eagles responded with
a solid drive but after getting to the Cincy 11 yard line 2
straight sacks forced a 40 yard field goal attempt which Tony
Franklin connected on to make it a 7-3 game. The score remained
7-3 into the 2nd quarter as each team was unable to move the ball
and exchanged punts. The Eagles forced a

turnover at midfield early in the 2nd quarter and looked to take the lead
for the first time. Ron Jaworski hit Charlie Smith on a 40 yard pass play to
get to the Bengals 3 yard line. A penalty pushed the ball back to the 10 but
Jaws came thru on 3rd down hitting Harold Carmichael for the go ahead TD.
The Bengals threatened to tie the game as Kenny Anderson completed 5 passes
for 56 yards but Jim Breech missed a 41 yard field goal. Late in the 1st
half a weak 16 yard punt gave the Bengals good field position but a late
fumble helped Philly maintain a 10-7 lead at the half.
The Eagles took the kickoff to start the 2nd half and put together a 14
play, 83 yard drive keyed by 3 Jaworski completions on 3rd down. Wilbert
Montgomery capped the drive with an 8 yard TD run for a 17-7 lead. Each team
had a quick 3 and out before the Bengals mounted a solid drive lead by RB
Pete Johnson's pounding the ball in the ground game. The Eagle's D was
finally able to stop the Bengals at the 9 yard line and special teams came
thru with a blocked field goal keeping the score at 17-7. The Bengal's D
stuffed the Eagles and got the ball back at midfield. Kenny Anderson drove
the Bengals to the Philly 9 yard line and this time Jim Breech connected on
a 26 yard field goal to make it 17-10 with 11 minutes to go. The Eagle's,
fearful of putting the ball in Kenny Anderson's hands with a chance to tie
the game, went on a 13 play drive taking over 8 minutes off the clock and
more importantly forced the Bengals to use all their timeouts. Tony Franklin
capped the drive with a 21 yard field goal to make it a 20-10 game with 2:35
left and Cincy out of timeouts. The Bengals were unable to move the ball and
gave the ball back on downs. Ron Jaworski took a knee for the final play and
the Eagle's were crowned winners of the CFL Early 80's. Contributed
