Series Stats: Phillies and Mets

Outstanding Game MVP: Johnstone (Game 1), Matlack (Game 2), Koosman (Game 3), Christenson (Game 4), Carlton (Game 5), Boone (Game 6) & Schmidt (Series MVP) THE VET (UPI) - The '76 Phillies served notice to the rest of the teams in the tournament by coming back from a 2-1 deficit in this big series vs the veteran NY Met squad.  The Amazins featured a tough veteran pitching staff that was coming off a huge upset win over the pre-tournament favorite 76 Reds.  In this series the Mets' undoing was their strength...their much vaunted pitching staff.
The Franchise, Tom Seaver lost both his outings in this series, while his counterpart on the Phils, Steve Carlton won both of his.  This in a nutshell  explains why the Mets did not win.  The Phillies also got timely hitting from Mike Schmidt, who seemed to hit a late inning HR any time it was needed.  Schmidt batted  .435 and had 4 HR's.  The Mets on the other hand could not rely on their big hitter, Dave Kingman.  Their surly slugger hit .200 on the nose and had only 1 dinger.  Kingman fanned 10 times in 20 AB's and went down swinging during every clutch situation imaginable.  Mets manager Andy Weinrib took his Amazin's about as far as one could have expected.  The Phillies are a rock solid team and certainly (on paper) the best NL team remaining in the tournament having lost only 3 games along the way.
